Upgrading Cisco virtual appliances v 14.0

I guess there is always a moment when you get stuck with an upgrade.

While trying to upgrade our virtual appliances from v 13.5 to the latest v 14.0 Release we ran into an issue which aborted the upgrade. Even when re-trying a full new download of the upgrade image we still did fail with an error that nextroot can not be extended.

We have started running virtual appliances with v11 and have since upgraded very promptly to the next available Releases. When trying the same process with v 14.0 we failed.

Long story short, with the addition of new features the the size of the initial volume used to download the next boot image has become to small. It appears impossible for Cisco to extend that image of existing deployed images beyond the size initially deployed. The initial size was set to 400 MB , now they need 4 GB.

Now the bad news, depending when you started your journey you are very likely in a need to fully re-deploy the OVA files of all your ESA/SMA's on your virtual platform for this upgrade.

Not well communicated at all Cisco.
